IlluminArts and ICA Miami present

Uprising: A musical performance inspired by the work of artist Paulo Nazareth

October 4, 2019

IlluminArts presents Uprising, a musical exploration inspired by Paulo Nazareth's first solo US museum exhibition, “Melee,” at ICA Miami. An artist who works across mediums, Nazareth uses performance and sculpture—monumental and ephemeral—to critique the colonial experience in Brazil and the Americas. His durational performances and installations draw from his joint African and Indigenous heritage to highlight marginalized historical legacies, non-Western cosmovisions, and potential methods of nonexploitative living and relating. Featuring music of Brazilian composers Hector Villa-Lobos, Francisco Mignone and Chico Buarque, along with music by Native American composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate and others, this non-traditional performance experience will by one you don't want to miss. IlluminArts welcomes back pianist and arranger Mary Adelyn Kauffman, baritone Jorell Williams (previously seen in the 2017 performance, The Dandy Lion Roars), and "show-stealing" (New York Times) soprano, Melissa Wimbish to lead the ensemble in this musical uprising.

We are thrilled to announce that the Six Year Anniversary Celebration of IlluminArts will take place on November 17, 2019 from 4:00-7:00PM.

IlluminArts debuted on the Miami cultural scene on November 10, 2013. In our short history we have collaborated with prominent institutions in the community to tell stories through art and music including the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Bass Museum of Art, Lowe Art Museum, de la Cruz Collection, Bakehouse Art Complex, Miami Center for Architecture and Design and Oolite Arts. We are grateful for the support of the community, and it has been a joy to present performances of the highest caliber to Miami’s community for the last six years.

Diego Gutierrez: Open Up with Roomful of Teeth

January 26, 2020

IlluminArts and Oolite Arts are thrilled to present Diego Gutierrez: Open Up with Roomful of Teeth on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the Faena Theater. Enjoy a special brunch before the show at 10:30AM and the performance at 12:30PM.

Diego Gutierrez: Open Up is a special musical performance inspired by the artist's solo exhibition Hypersensitive Romantic, featuring Roomful of Teeth in their Miami debut. Roomful of Teeth is a GRAMMY-winning vocal ensemble dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from vocal traditions the world over, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning process, forges a new repertoire without borders.

Roomful of Teeth will highlight Gutierrez' work through a curated music program including selections from Caroline Shaw's Pulitzer Prize winning piece, Partita for 8 voices. Through this performance and his solo exhibition, Diego Gutierrez opens up his studio practice, investigating the meaning of how his work functions in a public setting where it might be activated in unexpected ways. He probes the function of painting, synthesizing varied art historical approaches and pushing formal boundaries by tearing surfaces, adding sculptural elements, and re-working subject matter obsessively. Join us for this unforgettable exploration of music, art, process, romance and freedom.
